Review of Space Dandy
Space Dandy is a Dandy guy in space Created by the same Director of Cowboy Bebop and Samurai Champloo comes a anime about Dandy and his crew and their hunt for rare aliens. If you expect to get the same story/character quality as Watanabe earlier works then you might as well skip this one. Space Dandy is a episodic series with no real connection to each episode. In one episode the crew turns into a zombie and in the next one they go for a hunt on a giant breast monster.. yes you heard me right. Then in the next episode after that they are backat their spaceship alive and ready for more stupid hunts.
Plot & Story - 6
Each episode does something different. Some episodes are great while others are decent, but for the most part it's pretty enjoyable. There is nothing special going on other than a new setting in which Dandy and his crew are stuck in, hunting aliens or doing something weird like a space race or being on a planet with talking flowers while being chased by a gorilla general for no reason. So If you are looking for a anime with a story and buildup then you will be disappointed. It reminds me of adult cartoons like Family Guy and Simpsons, with action and humor but there does not seem to be a point A to B plot goal for the show to reach.
Characters - 6
Dandy is Elvis inspired dude, who really loves hit up on all female characters in the show, even if they are aliens. QT is a cleaning robot who is probably the smartest out of the crew.. but then again none of them are really smart to begin with. Tho to be fair as a robot he has a pretty decent character around him, and gets his own episode at the end that shows a more emotional side of him. And at last there is Meow, a weird cat alien like creature who wears shabby clothes and spends a lot of his time on his phone being lazy. From time to time he argues and fight with Dandy which is pretty fun to watch. What I miss is more character development, its pretty lacking even if you take the episodic nature into factor.
Sound & Music - 7
Watched the first episode in sub and there rest in dub. Both are pretty good. QT has a auto-tune voice in the dub which fits him well. The intro is good, with a funky song that I still have on my brain... don't know if it ever will leave my brain. The soundtrack is for the most part good, nothing rememberable but nowhere bad either.
Art & Animation - 9
The strong point of this series by far. Wonderful animation, particularly in the first episode. So many colors and fluid animation in motion. The animation quality drops a tad bit after that but stand very strong
Enjoyment - 7
So far I have been very critical of Dandy expect for the animation. But despite the character and plot flaws I enjoyed Space Dandy for what it is. I did not expect another Cowboy Bebop, but I still think its important to point out what they could have done better and what someone should expect jumping in to it. I will not go out of my way to recommend it, but I recommend to everyone who I into episodic shows with action and humor.
