Review of A Whisker Away
A lot of people liked this film and it really bothers me how people can enjoy this. First of all, the story. I actually didn't hate the first 2/3 of the movie, it sets up the characters, the circumstances fairly well. the main girl Muge is selfish and genuinely is a pain in the ass, but soon it was explained how she became this way. Still not likable though. The main boy Hinode is definitely a better character than Muge, but the bar wasn't that high in the first place. Thier romance wasn't that bad, in my opinion, you can see where they are coming from fromboth sides.
But the last 1/3 of the film was just SO DUMB.
The villian was set up to be this intimidating foe from the start of the film, and somehow he turned into a disappointing joke. The final "fight" was just ridiculous and I couldn't enjoy a single scene in Cat Land.
When the main plot is supposed to tie together, it just brings more confusion and the characters just SUDDENLY changed.
The plot about Muge's family problems(which was the most important arc in Muge's character) was resolved...because Muge met a cat who also escaped her family so she suddenly became sympathetic for her mother even though she was this selfish brat throughout the film...??(And I mean, maybe her mother was just selfish and didn't deserve the redemption.)
Somehow the film decided to take a really serious scene (Muge's original mother and stepmother fighting) in a COMEDIC way, and that just made me mad.
Hinode suddenly could speak for himself for no reason in the end of the film, when his WHOLE CHARACTER ARC was about it...
The art was really good, I mean they made Penguin Highway.
The sound was really not memorable...
So overall, don't watch this movie, it's not worth your time.
