Review of Wonder Egg Priority: My Priority

One thing I have heard many people say about WEP as a whole is that it is nonsensical. While I can agree some concepts are dropped into the show without a lot of preparation beforehand, I think most of it can be understood with some thought from the audience. It is a hard show to watch casually but if you understand the concepts it is trying to portray, it is an extremely rewarding watch. Far from nonsensical. What I do think is nonsensical however is this special in general. I have no clue why it exists. The special reminds me of one word and that isunnecessary. It starts with a (i’m not shitting you) 24 minute recap of the events of the story so far. That is about half of the entire runtime of the special. While I think a recap of the events is fine for a show as complex as WEP, 24 minutes is excessive. Anyone who has seen the show will already have an idea of what's going on so having a recap of this magnitude seems a bit redundant.

What it has in terms of animation is a huge downgrade from the beautiful trippy animation of the rest of the show. There are times in which nothing moves for a solid 30 seconds and you can tell the budget for this special was a fraction of the budget for the actual show.

The performances are just as great as the original run, however. If there is one thing I can say is done well in this special, it’s that. The main cast still feels like awkward tweens who have now figured more of their lives out and Kanata (Ai) is still a stand out performance even in something as trivial as this.

The new plot is almost nonexistent, and doesn’t do much to actually wrap anything up. It actually leaves a couple more questions than answers. I think that was intentional, however. My running theory is that this special is actually a set up for a planned WEP S2. There are just too many doors open at this point for me to believe that this is it.

If this is true and there ends up being a season 2 (which i think is about 70% likely). That doesn’t make the special any less boring and begs the question… why isn’t this just the first episode of season 2. Why make this a special episode? It’s all just so unnecessary and while I can’t actually call WEP special bad, I can call it what it is… a nothing special that made me feel nothing and to me, that's worse.
