Review of The Demon Sword Master of Excalibur Academy
This show is... boring. I wouldn't recommend it to anyone who isn't enticed by one or more of the following aspects: 1. Rebirth of a demon king into the future as a human 2. Shota Harem of schoolgirls 3. Generic battles with magic and spirit guns The show really excels in these three categories. It manages to really dig in on these premises. The first episode is somewhat high quality and you almost don't notice that the monsters are 3D. But after that, it all goes downhill. The show increasingly sexualizes the underage female cast, and even forces the kid to deal with it. The monsters are all 3DCGI monsters (except for the tree guy)... The harem doesn't really occur as a harem per se, but moreso 1/2 girls kissing him on the cheek and a bunch thinking of themselves as his older sisters.
Aside from this, the show fails in some pretty obvious manners. Firstly, the pacing is boring. The only fights that have any intrigue are extremely slow (like an entire episode for what amounts to 10 sword slashes and a few energy beams)... And the rest of the fights are painfully generic 3D CGI battles with the same 3 monsters dozens or hundreds of times. We even get to see the most obvious clip recycling IN THE FINAL EPISODE. If you are at all paying attention, you will think "hey, I watched those skeletons kill those baddies using ice and a mace just last episode!" and then you realize almost every battle up until this point has been recycled. The MC has one animation that they use three times for him drawing his op sword. They took the time out of our watching to mend his clothes, just so they could reuse the same animations from a previous fight. Even some of the ecchi is recycled. We see the same clip of the main waifu walking out in her towel three different times throughout the season. Honestly, it all gets to a point...
All in all I can't really dock the show too harshly though. There aren't any major apparent plotholes and there is clearly at least SOMETHING here to work with. I simply don't think that there is much merit to the show beyond it meeting basic standards. It is a servicable story, but as a show I cannot respect it, for whatever reason. 5/10.
