Review of Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba Entertainment District Arc
First Part No Spoilers (Spoilers for previous arcs) My way of thinking, I judge how a story is told, rather then what the story is. Story 8/10 - Art 10/10 - Sound 9/10 - Characters 9/10 - Enjoyment 10/10 This review is through the eyes of someone who loves most Shonen anime. This next arc in Demon Slayer managed to be even better than the previous arc. After Rengoku's death, I wondered how the next Hashira, Uzui Tengen would stack up in comparison. After the arc revolving a lot around Uzui as a character, I believe is better than Rengoku. He had more badass and even funnier moments.Rengoku was a character I felt had potential, but sadly he was killed before we could see more of him, which I felt added to the tragedy. As the name of the arc suggests, they go to hunt demons in the Entertainment District of Japan. While this is usually portrayed for more fanservice in most anime, Demon Slayer didn't go so lewd or ecchi. They show more of the beautiful side of it all. The season starts with set up, but halfway through ramps up to some of the most epic action sequences I've ever seen in anime, and easily the best in the show so far, even toping Rengoku's fight. It keeps with the same formula as the rest of the show so far, not different from other shounen anime really. But compared to other shows like it, I never got bored watching the characters interact. Even conversations with minor side characters had personality to them.
Minor Spoilers from here on for this arc.
Uzui Tengen was a blast through this whole season. Being the god of flashiness that he is, he was enteraining, funny, and had some of the best fight scenes I've seen in anime. In the final fight, I was jumping in my seat at with how much adrenaline I had going though me. I want to see more of Tengen's wives too. I was hoping to see more of them in this season, but the few scenes they got were all entertaining still. Tanjirou's caring nature pushes him to go berserk after the death of innocent people, which was another amazing scene. Nezuko even gets a crazy scene where her demon powers give her immense strength and abilities unlike what we've seen before. While they aren't explored in to how she became so strong, I feel it's something set up for later. They keep the steaks high with characters growing more tired and injured over time, and I don't mean bumps and burses. I mean cuts, stab wounds, and severed limbs. It kept the tension up throughout. The demons in this arc are some of the fiercest faced so far, Gyutaro being my personal favorite now with how crazy yet badass he was. But like the previous demons, they made us feel for the human side within them. What Demon Slayer still does better than most Shounen is pacing. It never keeps us waiting too long for the action to start, or the next story beat to hit. While yes, Demon Slayer's Heroes Journey is the same as any shounen, DS's way of telling it is my favorite from all shounen I've watched. I look farward to more seasons and the remaining Hashira and Upper Moon Demons.
