Review of The Wind Rises
I once read that Miyazaki himself described the film after watching its' premiere as "the first time he ever cried during a screening of one of his own movies". It's not hard to see why. This is a absolutely beautiful tale of passions and dreams, love and loss, and how the most inspired of people can see what no one else can. Ghibli has hit it on the mark again with Miyazaki's supposed final film before another of his retirement announcements, and if this was his true one, than this movie would not have been a disappointing conclusion to his illustrious career. I've even seen reviewsdescribing this as his magnum opus, his masterpiece. The animation is GORGEOUS, everything from the lush scenery to the decadent fires and darkness of tragedy and war. How the engineers and the main character can envision perfectly in their minds how their aircraft will fly in the skies. The movie utilizes the technology available well, while still keeping to their distinctive style. The romance in this is so lovely, yet also so hard to watch as it progresses. The music fits the moods well, accentuating a personal moment as well as a vision of wonder and fantasy. Our characters are good to relate to, their struggles and tribulations. An excellent plot about the creator of the Zero aircraft and his life inspiring that. Good at some times, sad at others.
I would agree that this is really one of Miyazaki's best, and another great addition to Ghibli's collection.
