Review of Devilman: Crybaby
This show is pure drama. If you're not a fan of hard drama, I urge you don't watch it. All of the plot points are hit extremely fast. Maybe they were trying to make up for having to fit inside a 10 episode limit, but it's really to the detriment of the story. Most all of the scenes where characters you know are dying that are meant to evoke an emotional response fall flat. Mostly because you barely get time to know the characters, but also in a large part that the conflict that involves the drama typically happens in the beginning or middle of that episode. There'slittle build-up, thus even what would be well executed payoff in a good series has little emotional impact.
...Except near the end where there is a particularly brutal death of a character who was around for the entire series. That one actually worked, and it will piss you off.
It's a shame, since the pilot episode made this series seem promising. The ending is so fucked; worst depressing ending I have ever seen in an anime.
