Queen Millennia · review
Queen Millennia is a sci fi space opera in the visual simile of Galaxy Express 999 and Captain Harlock, but in terms of its delivery it's like watching one episode of Galaxy Express 999 stretched out for an entire show's 3-4 season length... It is immensely satisfying when viewed against the other works of Leiji Matsumoto... I've watched almost everything and this was practically my last stop unless I step over and pick up Starblazers/Space Battleship Yamato. This show is glorious and expansive. Picture Quality: Sentai recently released a restored print of the show on Bluray and that was my viewing method. The picture quality is fantastic. I had the opportunity to see the Galaxy Express 999 on crunchyroll stream compressed with scratches, popping color splotches, and other artifacts, and I watched that again on the S'mores released dvd, and then I saw GE999 tv on the bluray that Discotek released with the restored picture quality and sound that looks and sounds great. Queen Millennia looks and sounds even better. I'm shocked that we got it at all, but moreso, I'm shocked that it has not a hint of agedness in it. This is a very good print of the show, it looks new.
The show is kind of like Three Body Problem, Journey to the Center of the Earth, and the Tale of Princess Kaguya. It has a steady stream of developments, but like One Piece it never breaks flow to re-establish its story... it just steadily adds in breaking events so that episodes both follow what has happened, and introduce their in episode locales, vehicles, and events that feed into the continuing story. Compared to the other Leijiverse works this is far more like watching something on HBO and it makes Queen Millennia feel far more contemporary than anything else Leiji Matsumoto ever put out.
It still looks like Leiji Matsumoto made it though... We've got our staunchly steadfast unhandsome yet manly potato spuds, and weeping willowy leading ladies straight off the 70's french model runway.
I'll throw my full recommendation behind this one... I've always respected that the Leijiverse is a very YMMV collection of shows and movies that won't appeal to everyone. The only limiting factor for this show that might pause my recommendation is the DUB only crowd, if you're unable to view subtitles then I'm sorry... for everyone else, I say this is a worthy jumping on point as your first Leijiverse show, or... if you've seen the others but you haven't seen QM, then by gum... pick yourself up and get on that! we HAVE IT in America NOW! What are you waiting for! It's on Hidive and it's on Bluray and it's on Apple TV... or you can buy episodes on Amazon Prime.
