Review of Miss Kobayashi's Dragon Maid S
Here's the second season of one of Kyoto Animation's best series, being Miss Kobayashi's Dragon Maid S. I could say that this is an improvement from the last season along with some things that I question even the mangaka's motives, but it is what it is. The story is still Miss Kobayashi and Tohru going through their daily life as what you would see them as a married couple with Kanna as their "daughter" until one day, a new Chaos Faction dragon named Ilulu gets the drop on them, looking to cause some chaos. Thankfully, Tohru manages to stop Ilulu. However,Ilulu tries to persuade Kobayashi even when Ilulu doesn't know that Kabayashi is a woman. When Ilulu tries something for giggles, she is hunted down by a dragon hunter, but Kobayashi intervenes when she wants to talk with Ilulu about her lonliness. Afterwards, Ilulu now live with Kobayashi, Tohru and Kanna like a new "daughter" of the family while adjusting to the life of humans and even how dragons can get along with humans like our tight knit cast.
Ilulu is a nice addition to the cast when it comes to bringing something new to the series. Her backstory is subtle on why you would feel sorry for her. Her meeting up with this high school boy named Take while forming a friendship, and maybe more than such as we go down that line, thanks to Take's grandmother who is offering Ilulu a job at a local candy store as she was told to get a job. But why is her design like that? I know folks will make the argument and tell me that those are flame sacs, which I know. However, when you look at someone who has a body of either a middle schooler or at least a small woman, I couldn't help but think of it like that one weird skit from The Man Show, which I know that wouldn't slide in today's moral standards. Yes, I do question the mangaka's thoughts sometimes. Then again, plenty of mangaka's have done some illegal and worse things when you look them up. If you know certain ones that have done so, you'd know what I mean. But I digress. Ilulu's voice actresses are Tomomi Mineuchi for Japanese and Kristi Rothrock for English dubbing works well for her character and her demeanor.
Take is also a nice addition as he's the Kobayashi for Tohru or the Takiya to Fafnir or the Kanna for Saikawa, when he'd found out that his grandmother has hired a new clerk for her candy shop for the kids. He is voiced by Hiro Shimono in Japanese and Jordan Dash Cruz in English, who captures his voice well as his character goes. The humor that goes on between the two does get a little over, yet still gives me some chuckles. But Ilulu and Take can't be the only characters that get the spotlight. Everyone else in the cast still continues their crazy antics like Tohru working at this maid cafe, making it a success while befriending the coworkers who work there, too. There is also the time when Fafnir wants Lucoa to do poses for his novel, which sadly doesn't sell well. We also see some backstory involving Tohru and Elma, who used to be friends and now managed to rebuild it after this epic fight. Yet they still don't like each other very much. The feeling is neutral, if you ask me. Then you have this camping segment when Elma was looking out for Kanna, Saikawa and Shouta, yet Elma was a ditz and they wondered off and now has to go look for them, which they were going opposite with one another. The funniest thing is that she dominates this bear when asking for directions that weren't going so well. There was also the time when Kanna went to America after she had a fight with Kobayashi and met up with this girl named Chloe, and they hit it off while learning a lesson from one another involving family.
It's amazing that the wholesomeness that this anime is best known for is right there. Yet my problems with it are still the same, yet it feels lessened in some areas, like whenever Lucoa wants to comfort Shouta. But it might be me when there's even more to that stupid face that Saikawa makes whenever she makes contact with Kanna in any way possible, and maybe when it comes to Ilulu, I guess. But, hey, at least we get a sneak peek on what would be the future that we see Kanna and Saikawa getting married as the lesbian couple as I do see them be. That scene being snuck in are the director's words, not mine, by the way. If you've seen how it goes between Kanna and Saikawa since the first season of Miss Kobayashi's Dragon Maid, you would know as much as I do on how the outcome would go in the future. Maybe that would be the case for the upcoming movie that centers around Kanna? Your guess is as good as mine as I could. It's nice to see the Emperor of Demise, Tohru's father makes an apperence every once in a while to check in on his daughter. We also see Shouta's dad, and I don't know if that was intentional, but his face is just creepy as hell. That smile just makes me think upon that because that's something a serial killer would look like or something from American Psycho or Dexter.
The animation is much improved in this, with how the environment goes and the fights between the dragons are over the top on the scale of epicness. The expressions of everyone are also over the top as they bring the drama up more like every sitcom you would see on TV. Hell, even the drama between the characters are improved as the voice actors give it their own. Kanna's and Saikawa's voice acting in English does improve a little bit, yet I don't really find their voices match. Ilulu and Take's, I found a good match. All leading up to a fun series that has improved on so many levels despite some issues that still linger here and there. It's a must-watch if you're a fan of the Miss Kobayashi's Dragon Maid series. Even before the upcoming movie, that is a sequel to this.
With that being said, I give S nine little Take doll comfy in-between Ilulu's "flame sacs" out of ten. 9/10. To be fair, the design is a minor gripe. The design is done by the magaka's words, not mine.
