Review of Hunter x Hunter
Hunter X Hunter (2011) One of the greatest anime ever. "A must-watch" the vast majority of anime watchers say. That's true. In my opinion it's a little sad if you start out with this and not with the 1999 version, which I like slightly better. Now, regarding whether you should watch it it or not, yes, you should definitely watch it. Unfortunately, I don't feel like I enjoyed it to the fullest (I will explain why in the following paragraph/s). Plot: It's fascinating. In this world, (one of) the highest and the most distinguished professions is "Hunter". Becoming one is an objective next to impossible, with extremely low rates ofpassing. The main characters start off with that right of the bat and after that are faced with various missions and tasks, meeting new friends, allies and enemies.
Characters: Awesome, great. 10 out of 10. My favorite was Knuckle. Great guy. Almost each of them has their introduction, comparison, damage, reflect and redemption arc. It's really great. Even though they don't have a lot of character development, just barely, enough to be useful to the plot. And here is exactly where I am unsatisfied. The main character, Gon, is so selfish most of the times, so insisting, that he becomes dull after some point (or at least that's what happened with me). He's always causing problems for the others in order to achieve something and after he achieves it, he needs his friends again to clean up after his mess. He is shown to use barely any intellect during the majority of the series.
Animation style: 10 out of 10! What were you expecting?! It's MADHOUSE we are talking about here. They simply nailed it. But personally I would like to see more gruesome images, just to give us that vibe of terror and letting us know that you know mess with life because you don't get a second chance.
I would like also to add that the characters talk a lot. Like, A LOT!!!! In the most epic battle scenes, with the smooth animation and that music that gives you goosebumps, they slow down the action, lower the music and one of the characters starts talking, analyzing and explaining what happened, the next steps they will take, the enemies response and so on. It's infuriating. The end is... not in the end (for me). I consider the real end to be Episode 135.
If you read up to this point, thank you!
