Review of Memories
Memories is a compilation only in the sense that it is a bundle of three separate short movies. These three movies have barely anything in common, and as far as I am concerned only the first short, "Magnetic Rose", is really worth your time. So, let me start with "Magnetic Rose". It's a sci-fi ghost ship story that really nails the atmosphere, plot, music and visuals. The visual style is old, but high quality and smooth. The character proportions and coloring in Magnetic Rose is one of my favorite styles and similar to Ghost in the Shell. The foreboding build-up to shit hitting the fan iswell done through curious happenings inside the ghost ship and the characters' mental states deteriorate steadily throughout their adventure. I don't want to spoil too much, but it is definitely a bit of a grim tale and asks the viewer a question about what illusory happiness is worth.
As a standalone, I rate it a 8/10.
The second story, "Stink Bomb", wasn't too bad. But it certainly was not a big hit for me, either. The story is entirely centered around a particular kind of humor and a dense main character. If you do not like the initial premise and joke that the entire movie runs on, it is unlikely you'll find this movie to be very entertaining or interesting. Nevertheless, it was quite the adventure and I didn't mind watching it.
As a standalone, I rate it a 6/10.
The final story, "Cannon Fodder", was not at all to my liking. I understand that it is a commentary on certain philosophies, and the visual style is certainly depressing and unique. But what it failed to do was tell an engaging story. I didn't enjoy this movie so I won't say too much about it.
As a standalone, I rate it a 4/10.
