Review of Whisper of the Heart
As seemingly mundane and boring this film might seem, it's a heartwarming and well-written coming of age movie. Without Miyazaki's typical grandeur animation and style, we get to see more of the typical and finer intricacies of burning adolescence - and the fickle hearts that come with it. It's an amazing and detailed depiction of childhood feelings and ambition. I wish we had more films that took this approach, of a slow and unhurried pace, letting the audience appreciate the turbulence and ups and downs of youth. It's a very cute, wholesome, and endearing film. Rest in peace, Yoshifumi KondÅ. However, I wouldn't recommendit to those who are expecting a grand, typical Ghibli movie with stunning, unique visuals; as for the most part, this film doesn't have any of that. This movie is about an archetypal young girl growing up, experiencing the world, coming to terms with her future, dealing with relationships, and learning about herself. Otherwise, I highly recommend it.
