Review of Anohana: The Flower We Saw That Day
I'll cut to the chase: if you're sick and find pleasure in having your heart strings slapped like an electric bass you will appreciate this show. Personally I find the synopsis a little deceiving. I felt like the series was more like a haunting than simply regretting the past. Story: 9/10 The story itself is pretty straight forward. The series is not really plot driven, but for what it was I think it was executed very well. Something I find with a lot of these sad anime's is that the plot will try to force sad back stories onto you and I feel that in real lifeno one would suddenly give you their life story like that. But in Anohana, the times the characters talked about themselves and when they chose to be silent seemed more realistic and I appreciate the work put into doing that.
Art: 8/10
The art was pretty good. The art style of the characters made them quite attractive, but there wasn't anything that really blew my mind.
Sound: 7/10
Nothing extremely special with the sound, it was just good.
Character: 10/10
I really like how the characters were designed in this anime. They were attractive on the outside, but really ugly and despicable once you got to know them. I find that this is kind of rare for a lot of shows, and it was actually very refreshing to see that the creators had made realistic characters. This show does not candy-coat people's vices, and they make it pretty clear that they are not at all good people. Despite the fact that they are pretty disgusting, I still grew to like most of the characters a lot. This kind of bitter-sweet relationship with the characters was really interesting and well done.
Enjoyment: 9/10
I personally enjoyed Anohana a lot, and I feel that probably 8 out of 10 people would agree because it was really relatable. I found enjoyment in watching the characters break down and seeing them expose their selfish intentions. I'll emphasize this again: this is a pretty sad show so if you enjoy watching people cry you will have fun.
Overall: 9/10
You know that voice you ignore when you find pleasure in someone's pain? Well this show exposes that voice, and I found it great. It's rare to find an anime that's as truthful as this one and I feel that the creators did a pretty damn good job with it.
