Review of Mob Psycho 100 II
I greatly enjoyed my time watching this show while it was airing, and at a time considered it to be a 10/10. Unfortunately, this show falls off towards the end and doesn't match the climactic ending of the previous season, which is a damn shame because I think this season does a better job overall. The character development this season, as well as SOME of the action, more than makes up for the basic story, most of the time. I cannot stress that this show is a marvel of modern animation, and in my opinion, matches or even surpasses giants such as one punch man.The comedy is great and the characters are for the most part unique and whimsical.
The biggest problem is that this show follows the same formula as the last season, which is to say there are 6 episodes of low-medium stakes character and world building, followed by 7 episodes of high-stakes action more closely following the psychic organization "Claw". This could be great, and I think it is good enough, but the Claw episodes are more story focused, and the "high stakes" nature of them clashes with the looming fact that Mob is unbeatably powerful. They do a good job of subverting this flaw at times, and at one point at the beginning of the Claw arc, feign a shocking plot twist that could have truly changed the nature of the show entirely; but it is immediately recognized as a feint. I don't know whether or not this is unfortunate, because that twist would have irreversibly changed the nature of the show, but it would have made the story something worth caring about. Sadly the story really isn't anything worth caring about, and the following 7 episodes feature some cool character development and very impressive animation, but the final episode felt rushed and wasn't nearly as cool as 1000% Reigen.
This show clearly misses some opportunities, and it makes me wonder how things would have turned out had the writer been more ambitious, but what we got is overall very satisfying to watch and the enjoyment factor is undeniable. If you don't care for splendid animation whatsoever though, and are looking for something more comedy or story focused, this show may not be for you, because half of this season, much like the last season, is a relatively uninteresting battle anime, and the comedy of the 1st half mostly disappears.
