Review of Parasyte: The Maxim
Parasyte is a science-fiction thriller that follows highschooler Sinichi Izumi, as he faces the struggles of living a dual-life. A strange otherwordly parasyte has entered his body, but hasn't infiltrated his brain. Instead, the two must coexist in one body if it means surviving the other murderous parasytes, and this makes for an amazing yet unlikely friendship between the two. STORY:10/10 The story really was outstanding. The moment I watched the show I knew I was in for something exciting and new. As someone who doesn't watch science fiction that much, I have to say, I was pleasantly surprised at how fantastic the genre is. What Iliked most about the story is how it diverges away from cliche tropes. I was nearly rolling my eyes expecting Migi to take Sinichi's side and kill other parasytes to save the world, but that's not what happened. Instead, Migi was neutral and that made the story so much better.
ART: 9/10
Bluntly put, it's smooth, awesome color scheme, and has a realistic style of portraying humans instead of those other animes that make the characters' eyes take up 90% of the skull.
SOUND:9/10
Also bluntly put, very good soundtrack. Especially the opening and ending. Besides that, I didn't pay attention to it much.
CHARACTER: 6/10
Sinichi Izumi and Migi are interesting enough to keep the watcher focused, but Murano was such an insufferable character that I almost quit watching the show. Every time she was on screen I wanted to eat her face off. She becomes a major character towards the end of the series and I considered dropping the show. She was so dull, so boring, and every single episode felt the same when she was around.
A run down of their repetetive relationship:
1. She and Sinichi have an intimate and romantic moment.
2. Sinichi gets a call for help and has to leave midway the moment.
3. Murano looks gloomy for the rest of the episode and for the next 3 episodes, will walk past Izumi *COINCIDENTALLY* and give him a sad look.
4. Sinichi will try to apologize, and she'll just say:
"SINICHI-KUN, YOU'VE CHANGED!!!!" :(((((((((
That's it. That's the entire thing. The two have no chemistry and I cannot force myself to watch an entire show where all the thought and effort goes into one character and not their love interest.
But I forced myself to continue anyways, and luckily, the story, art, and music made up for such a horrible dynamic duo.
OVERALL: 8/10
If you can ignore how irritating Murano is, or how rushed and ill-fitting the ending is, you'll definitely enjoy this hidden gem of a show. I reccomend it.
