Review of Devilman: Crybaby
\The show that was released is called Devilman:Crybaby. It was a show that I had polarizing experience with. Nonetheless, people are already calling this anime of the year, and in my opinion,-quote me on this- "if this show was already the best of the year, then this year is gonna be very underwhelming" Before you decide to find my address and hunt me down, here are my thoughts.Every single element of this show I have seen before, but it's rare to see them all together. Devilman:Crybaby is about a crybaby named Akira. After a LOT of things happened he becomes a -not a demon-DDDDDDDDDDEEEEEEEEVVVVVVVVVIIIIIIIIIIIIIIILLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLMMMMMMMMMMAAAAAAAAAAANNNNNNNNN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!,ademon with a human heart. He goes around killing demons and running track and what not, but then the show takes a drastic turn, things get dark, and afterwards the show just goes and goes further, and when you expects it to slow down, it just keeps going further.
I actually liked this, the way that the final episode is so different from when the show started. BUT it felt like a rough way getting there. The story is not complex is but the ending definitely is.Touching on the themes of the show really quickly, in the first half at least, this show is very very explicit. But the second half kinda went to "Inuyashiki" levels of nonsense. I feel like people would not act like how they are portrayed in this show.
It's like an intense anime version of American Horror Story. In every episode, there are sexual scenes but like AHS, there is a certain uncanny twist to the sex and it gets very weird. Just take out those things from AHS, like clinical vampirism and weird breastmilk fetishes, and just replace it with the elements of the show PARASYTE and there you go.Not to mention the full frontal nudity. You'll be left turned on, but the dial will be on the setting called "uncomfortable". I feel like the sex can be a bit excessive making it look like this show was made by some horny high school kid who grew up the wrong way. Admittedly it does balance out the crazy depressing tone of the second half but that's what the characters are for, do you agree? no? well idk wut 2 tell u.
The animation is like a supreme pizza. This entire show feels like a student project, a really good one, but still it didn't look like anything else. The animation and style is nice but ironically, I wanna say that it's the weakest part of the show. I couldn't stop comparing it to Tatami Galaxy with all those colorsThe character designs are cool but I wish the demon designs were more crazy looking, but thats just nitpicking. The animation can get fluid and very abstract and trippy. But other times I couldn't help but to compare the animation to yes Ninja Slayer the animation. There are times where the immersion of the show is completely broken when things look awkward. And the parts where the drugs kick in, I feel like the animators where DRUGGED OUT OF THEIR FUCKING MINDS.Nothing more needs to be said.
The soundtrack in this show is great, but it suffers a form of identity crisis. I love the electronic one. It is so amazing. But then there are the orchestral pieces that are good too.Coming from the original source, it would make more sense for them to stick with orchestral pieces but hey that can't work when your at a nightclub full of drug abusing satanists. What really fell short was the dub, it could've done better.Something I haven't seen since Samurai Champloo was the use of beatboxing to explain what is going on right now. Not only is this brillant from a sound perspective, but also from a storytelling perspective.
"good job!"
Getting to the best part of the anime, the characters were surprisingly done very very well, it's applaud worthy.Starting with Akira, he is a person with a human heart, but he is still a crybaby. Following him, he is a character that I am jealous of because of his power, but I wish he was a bit more smarter. What I don't understand, is he gets horny to a very crazy degree. His "friend" Ryo is a crazy package, sometimes he does things very stupid, and then he acts okay? Wut? To clear it up more, I don't like people like him. He is emotionless and all the actions that he does(which mainly are stupid) have some reason but he never talks about them till the end.
Surrounding Akira's bae (not really) Mikki and her friends and family. The minor characters done in the show was clever. If you thought that Attack on Titan had "vury sad karactur deaths dat will mek u cry many tears like a baby bitch"(AOT fans,2014). YOU HAVENT SEEN NOTHING YET. Instead of having irrelevant characters, this show has the clever mind to have a hand full of characters and those characters are focused on and nothing else. When the show gets tired of showing boobs or blood, the show focuses on these people and it was a nice breather. I have to say it really pays off seeing these characters till the very end of the show............................................................*snicker*....heh..........
In the end , I liked this show for the same reasons i liked AHS, Tatami Galaxy, and Parasyte. This show is a treat to watch,BUT I don't think it's perfect. It's crazy, It's brutal, It can get stupid, It's a bit too horny, but its STYLISH and different without being "different". This show does have an ending that I will think about for a while(AKA a couple of months) but it's probably just me suffering from when I finished made in abyss.Suffering from that dark feeling that makes you question everything in the end. I probably felt that way because of the different turn this ending takes. This show looks like it was made as a project, but the students kidnapped a very talented director and forced him to help with the story and did the same with the art and composition to get that "extra credit".Yet, he just went along with it because he was bored out of his mind. Devilman:Crybaby was good, but people praise it like the second coming of EVANGELION 4.0. Hell,it may be the best of 2018, but let's not count our chickens before they hatch.
Overall-7
Donald Trump is in this show too, just wanted you to know.
