The Awakening · review
**Preface** I stumbled upon this donghua randomly, so therefore I have no idea if it is based on a novel, manga, or another source of media as inspiration for its material. Thus, my review will be based on how I perceived it at first hand. (SPOILER FREE) OVERALL: 6/10 Story: 5/10 Art and Sound: 8/10 Character: 6/10 Enjoyment: 6/10 Overall, I felt that the story and plot was a bit confusing to grasp at first. It took me 3 episodes into the series to get a decent gist of the premise of the series and into understanding the world that the donghuais set in. This is where the donghua lost most of its points in, in my opinion. I felt that the rules of the world and the introduction of the characters should've been introduced way earlier on in the series so that the viewer is not left stumbling about during the series trying to decipher the world on their own. I felt that I missed out on the impact of a lot of action scenes in the beginning since the "rules" or setting of the world had not been established earlier on so that the viewer could get a better understanding of the scenario unfolding.
In relation to the confusing plot and its delayed introduction, it negatively impacted my perception and understanding of the characters. The characters themselves are "okay." Not too much background information and story was given about them, therefore it was difficult to develop meaningful deep connections to them. I felt that if more time and material was given/created, the main characters could've become much more 3 dimensional and relatable. In addition, I felt that many characters were introduced in such an abrupt way without a clear introduction. This left me a bit confused about how they related to the story and what their role was in the plot.
Nonetheless, the donghua overall was a good time-killer to watch. It wasn't anything amazing, but it wasn't completely horrible. Just mediocre, which is disappointing because it looked like the series could've had a lot of potential (but who knows, there might be room for improvement if there is another season). Besides the weak story and characters, the art and animation was very good for CGI. When it comes to CGI I am fairly picky about the art and animation (for reference, Soul Land/Douluo Continent is a solid 10/10 with its amazing CGI animation). But the Xin Jue donghua's CGI art and animation was pretty good. I appreciate all the details the animators and artists put into designing the characters and action scenes. So at least the donghua gets a solid 8/10 VISUALLY.
By all means though, please feel free to give this donghua a watch. Maybe you will perceive it differently and maybe it's just me who is a bit slow XD. If you are trying to find a way to kill time, go ahead and watch this donghua. Just don't expect too much of it at first.
