Review of Chainsaw Man
Chainsaw Man, the most hyped anime of all time, delivered. From episode 1 this series was set to become one of the best series of the year, and it did put itself in the running. CSM delivered one of the best first episodes I've seen, showcasing peak animation, for 20+ minutes, minus a couple of seconds of CG with bad frame rate. Despite that minor flaw, the first episode was free lesson to the anime studios on how to do your pilot episode. From a successful first episode, Chainsaw Man pulled off good to great episodes throughout the first season. They emphasized character development, alongside devil killing flawlessly, never straying too far from each aspect of the anime. It was a pleasure to see studio MAPPA not shy away from blood, sex and rock n' roll. This series gave the audience a mature, realistic world with lots of intriguing aspects to it that make you feel excitement week to week, and now season to season, as we eagerly await season 2.
Animation 9/10
- Top notch animation, even when it's not warranted. CG is mostly good, but there are flaws in episode 1 and in a latter episode.
Sound 10/10
- VA work is bang on top to bottom. OST goes beyond the norm with 12 ED, all unique, and something for everybody. The sound effects and BGM are perfect.
Story 7/10
- The story exists, but is not fleshed out very well, that's not to say I hated the approach to storytelling. It is what it is.
Characters 10/10
- Every character is unique and a joy to watch, from their powers to their personalities. I cannot wait to see more from the full cast of characters. Denji and Power are dumb and dumber, and I love it.
Enjoyment 9/10
- Loved every moment, but I did expect the last episode to be flashier than it was.
In the end, Chainsaw Man gave us a great introduction into this new world, with great characters, who you can't help but root for. It delivers both physically in its animation, and emotionally through its story and presentation with a great supporting soundtrack. With as much hype as it had, thank MAPPA they did CSM justice. They clearly put a lot of love into this production. It's incredible how MAPPA is far and beyond all other studios when it comes to a complete body of work. Nobody does it better. I recommend this to anyone starved of a mature show, who likes fights, suggestive acts, great characters, with a splash of comedic touch.
