Chainsaw man is a supernatural (obviously) buddy-cop drama about the nuanced relationship between ambition and empathy in the dehumanizing context late-stage capitalism. Denji is a cynical hoodlum who gains the power the power to go absolute sicko mode from his vampiric battery-operated dog. He is recruited by a government-sanctioned petplay enthusiast to partner with Sausuke Ichihara and an autism-coded Zero Two. The characters all feel shamelessly authentic, and some of its most engaging moments are when its action-thriller premise gives way to slice-of-life and coming-of-age scenes where the personalities and their chemistry shine. Feels like a fusion of Hellboy and One-Punch Man.
