After watching the movie twice, I have come to a conclusion on how well I think the movie went. I will list both the good scenes and flaws, as well as giving my overall opinion on what I think of the movie. Keep in mind that my opinion may vary from others because I am an SAO fan. Firstly, I really like the soundtracks that were playing during the battle scenes. They also brought back some old soundtracks which to me felt a bit nostalgic. I feel that it's one of this movies strong points as the music seems to fit the battle scenes in aunique way and it also makes the movie a lot more enjoyable to the audience. (Epic music + Epic battle scene = Epic stuff). Also, the animation and graphics were really good, especially in comparison to the original anime. I was really impressed with the stunning visuals that the franchise had to offer.
Furthermore, I also liked the villains in this movie. They actually had a real motivation behind they're actions. Unlike the previous SAO villains such as Kayaba (I mean seriously, the dude forgot why he killed over 4000 people.).
At the beginning, it looked like all the elements of an epic villain were there and ready to be put into action. I mean, there is a super strong and difficult obstacle for Kirito to overcome, there was something at stake and it was not as cliche as "You die ingame you die IRL", and also it had some drama. Actual drama, between the two lovers in the movie. I found this a great aspect in the movie since I am somewhat a fan of drama. (Im not going to go in-depth in this topic because I might have to get into some spoilers if I do). And I also really like Yuna as a character (She has an interesting background story but I won't go further in depth because I dont really want to spoil the movie.
But of course, this movie has flaws.
The 'obstacle for kirito to overcome' that I mentioned earlier had some great potential. He had a motivation for his actions, and he had a very unique background. To be honest, his background seems a bit normal for a regular person. However, Kirito ended up outclassing him way too easily. In the movie they barely showed Kirito preparing for the fight (maybe a short montage) and after that he's able to go toe to toe with the 2nd best player in Ordinal Scale, even though it didn't look like he put in that much effort. It's a shame, I believe that it could've been one of Kirito's toughest battles to date. Thats not all. Sadly, the movie also did not develop characters such as Liz, Silica, Klein, etc. to a further extent. Sadly Liz and Silica didn't really develop as characters, Klein was more of a punching bag in this movie and Aegil did not really do much, infact I barely saw him in the movie. Sinon was also rarely present, but to be completely fair she was there to assist Kirito battling a boss, so she did contribute to the fight. As for Asuna, she did get more screentime, cleared 2 bosses and in my opinion contributed as much as Kirito, maybe more. Although sadly, I didn't see that much development in her as a character either, besides more contribution and screentime that she received in the movie. And Kirito, to be honest was more or less same as usual, although he was worried at certain points of time and I will not go further in-depth because I want to try and not spoil the movie for everbody.
So yeah, in conclusion, I think SAO overall is a great movie since I have come to like SAO for quite some time, sort of. I really like how they brought SAO to the big screen and I like what they have done, while the movie isnt the best out there, I still think that they have made progress and I hope they continue progressing.
