Review of The Ancient Magus' Bride
Oh Ancient Magus Bride and how polarizing you are. Well, to start off I think the biggest critique of the show other than its main premise (Which I think is actually a much more philosophical debate) is that the show has very slow pacing. I agree however I found myself enticed into the world. I think this show really rewards patience from the viewer something that a lot of anime and even movie or tv shows, in general, don't ask you to exercise. However, for those who are willing to watch it through they will be rewarded with one of the sweetest and heartwarming stories.Story 10/10
The main gripe most people have with the story is the premise and Chise being 15. Although I am a tad uncomfortable with her being in a relationship with Ellias him being a beast in a sense easy's that feeling. However, her age is rarely mentioned in the show and Chise does not act like a normally 15-year-old showing a lot of maturity for someone her age. Once you get past that the story often involves Chise and Ellias learning to uncover their emotions and learn from each other. To most this seems boring and repetitive but I love seeing both characters having to save the other. Ellias's magic can not always save the day, and Chise has to show Ellias how fragile and important human emotions can be.
Art 10/10
What can I say beautiful direction with gorgeous shots of nature etc.
Sound 10/10
I would say the soundtrack is on par with Violet Evergarden and Made in Abyss for being some of the best the anime industry has seen.
Character 9/10
My only gripe is that Chise's and Ellia's do not show a lot of progress until the end so for most people the development is hard to see or even comprehend. Also some designs are cliche or boring, I do love Chise's outfits and her design Ellias is very interesting and the side cast adds a lot.
Enjoyment 10/10
I am a sucker for emotional drama anime that don't necessarily have a villian or goal. The Ancient Magus bride is all about self discovery and uncovering your emotions. I think people who feel lost in life or are numb etc will connect a lot with Chise and Ellia's journey.
Overall 10/10 I think nothing is truly perfect but for the sake of me not being able to do 9.5s or anything of that nature a 10 will suffice. I would not say this anime is a must watch but rather a must try if you do not enjoy the story by episode 5 or so drop it.
