Review of Dorohedoro
When I started seeing this anime, I was very skeptical from the first episode. The strange way it is animaged using 3D CGI, and the way the story starts in the middle of the action with no background and no following explanations, leaves more of a feeling of "I can't keep up with this" than "I wonder what's next". Don't let either of those things fool you! 3D CGI animation is not common, and not usually as overused as it is with this series. However, the artistic work is top notch and everything blends in really perfectly. As you shuffle through the episodes you get that feelingthat the mix between 2D art and CG are one of the things that makes this one anime particularly special. The effects are absolutely amazing, and the whole thing carries a really "heavy" feeling throughout the episodes. It's a gory, dark themed anime, but it's perfect in that regard.
The story itself starts at a fast pace, you can barely keep up with it at the beginning, but as it progresses you get a more in depth (although not very deep) insight into the world and the characters in it. It leaves you with more questions at the end than you'd like, however that leaves a lot of space for a second season to take place. Very unusual world setting, that ends up being much simpler than it originally appears to be, and that works nicely.
The characters, as already mentioned, lead very simple lives with not that much background information to be covered. Somehow this also works fine, as is leaves you both wondering and makes you focus on the main storyline. Character design is exagerated, but that only makes it more interesting, and they all have such different personalities which is also a big plus.
I got a really amazing sense of enjoyment at the end, and also a lot of questions that I want to see answered in a next season. Overall this is an action packed anime that most people who don't want the philosophical kind of anime will absolutely love. And those that do, will love it as well for how different it is!
