The Devil Princess · review
There are no other reviews, so I thought I'd put my thoughts down since I just completed Volume 1. tl;dr: It's not bad. I don't regret reading it, but surely there is better out there. Maybe I wasn't the target audience as an early 90's male? I have the series on hold for now, as I have other books I want to try. I may revisit the series later on, so it was at least good enough for me to not drop it for certain. I'm hopeful that I got through the slowest part of the series with this volume and the rest may be more tomy liking.
The beginning of the book felt like it could have been condensed a bit. It starts you off in the demon realm of before the MC's human-birth, and serves to explain how/why she has her demon powers. I think it's good that it didn't just start us off as a human with demonic powers, but maybe the amount of detail here could have been better in a flashback, after we have a better connection to her. I'm thinking of maybe a somehow condensed version of Chapter 1, then revisiting those events later on.
I didn't quite get hooked on the book up until about 75% of the way through, probably because chapters 2, 3, and 4 are about her human age 1, 2, and 3. As a baby, there's only so much you can do, I get that. The author does make sure to have in-universe political pieces moving while our MC gets her bearings as to not put the reader to sleep. Well, it worked, since I finished it.
Things start ramping up around the middle of chapter 7, so a little further than half way through the book. Once I reached this point, I was actively looking forward to the conclusion of this arc. The action sequences were easy to follow, and it was rewarding getting to see the events unfold and conclude. This climax was the main reason for my rating - I probably would have rated lower and dropped it if this wasn't as engaging as it was. So if you make it to this point and you're still not interested, you might as well put the book down for good.
Overall... not bad. I think it would make a fine gift for someone's almost-teenage daughter who was interested in anime, as she might appreciate the playfulness of the early chapter's demon realm or the process of a super-baby growing up.
