Darling's Vanishing Act · review
Runaway Darling is a surprisingly good action-drama, with interesting characters and an engaging plot. In runaway Darling we follow the titular "Darling" (yes, that's his actual name) as he gets employed by varies clients to make use of his great escape abilities. Darling is an unique but engaging character. A complete womanizer with a mysterious past, and an incredible escape artist. He's witty and fun to follow around, and a great protagonist for this story. At first the manga takes a somewhat episodic approach, as Darling helps out various people (mostly ladies). But soon we start to get to an overarching narrative when the "boss" is introduced. Afemale mafia head who Darling becomes enamored with. she serves as a kind of deuteragonist/antagonist. From the brief encounters they've had, I can't wait to see how the relationship between the two of them evolves.
The art is decent but nothing to write home about. It does the job.
If it isn't clear yet, runaway darling is still a very early project. But so far it seems to have the potential to become a fantastic romantic thriller. I'm very excited to see where it goes from here.
