Movies Are Real · review

Before the hiatus and artist change, Movies Are Real was a fantastic read. The character writing, story pacing, and artwork were all beautiful. Unfortunately, chapters 36 and beyond throw all of that in the bin. I haven't been this disappointed at an art and story shift since The Legendary Moonlight Sculptor. Movies Are Real is about an actor who finds himself transported into the script, of which the scenarios aren't always pleasant. Our protagonist, Ki Man-sung, is forced to come to terms with his newfound ability. Unlike other series, this one explores themes of identity loss, loss of trust, and loss of love forone's art. The smooth pacing and well-drawn emotions always excelled in showing, rather than telling. I was deeply excited to see how Ki Man-sung would rediscover himself after his struggle with identity.

Chapter 35 was perfectly set up, all the pieces were finally starting to come together after all the sacrifice and inner turmoil... But, as you know, chapter 36 completely scraps everything the story worked for. The focus is no longer the characters that made the story so great, instead opting to focus on the absurdities of the main character's powers. Why have the hero work for anything when he can just be good at everything instantly? The phrase goes, "All good things in moderation..." Which this story promptly forgot, dumping an entire bag of salt into the batter.

Still, I loved the first 35 chapters so much, I cannot bring myself to rate this lower than a 7/10. It's not every day you find a series this special, and a few of those chapters remain stuck inside my head. If you're a fan of acting manhwa, are still intrigued, or just think I'm reading into things way too much, then I'd give Movies Are Real a try.
