Maria Children · review
In short, Maria Children is a manga about girls who fight (called 'mercies', or singular 'mercy') against monsters in a science fiction setting, with heavy influences of mecha musume and such. It starts off with a kid named Licorice/Lycoris being made to fight. Licorice was quite strong in the past, but due to memory loss, she's pretty much useless despite her attempts and strength of motivation. The people around her were hesitant to immediately "dispose" of her because of the potential that she could regain memories The story itself and the backgrounds of the characters weren't bad. Although Licorice was pretty much a punching bag fortragedy, she has a bittersweet ending in the manga, trying to uncover her past with another mercy. Decent depth to them, and I do dig the rule of cool soft science fiction environment of the story. The art is something that stood out to me, very expressive, nice environments, and detail. I had to bookmark a few pages because of how many I really liked.
In the end, it's a really enjoyable but shorter manga to finish in one day, and the re-read value isn't bad either.
