Deep Sea · review
Rewatched Deep Sea, so much better than the first watch. Movie is 11/10 overall. The animation, the characters, the detail not only through character design but the importance of names and the dialogue spoken. Story: When moving through the story at first, it may seem linear, but in reality, the story is underpinned by subtle hints of future and past events. An example of this is how, near the end of the movie, dialogue spoken by NanHe is relayed in the real world. This, alongside the story of ShenXiu and her mother, who left her family, has a dialogue of importance relayed as well. Itis genius. The story is also sad and grounded, but it has its fun and happy moments, just like life. In the end, Deep Sea is like remembering or dreaming the past while remembering trauma at the same time, and it's a masterpiece all around. 10/10
Animation: 11/10 off the bat. The animators took 6 years to innovate and create their own style of 3d animation to replicate traditional Chinese art for the movie. Billions of particles and effects alone could be in a singular scene; it was insane, and even through trial and error with flooding and loss of progress, they still proceeded to work and make this masterpiece of a film.
Direction: Tian, Xiaopeng was the director of this film, and I have to say... A master of his craft, he is. The story, instead of being about a hero like in their previous film starring Wukong (The Monkey King), who is generally seen as a masterful heroic blahblahblah... is about a delicate and sensitive little girl. The fact that the film was made mostly by men is astounding and inspiring to me. The ideas, the planning, 7 years of work, 10/10 work.
Characters: NanHe, a deeply humane character; humorous, flawed, a bit money-driven, but also the GOAT for what he did for ShenXiu. ShenXiu, a little girl who struggled to deal with her mother leaving her, wished for her to return, and it brought us to the overall plot of the story.
Personal: Honestly, I have admiration for the people who made this film as well as the film, more than any other film/filmmakers I have ever experienced. In an age where most films lack that humanity within them and are for pure enjoyment, this story and the work documented showing the passion is just ecstatic to me. It's inspiring how much time and work they put into this beautiful story, and it really encourages me to keep moving forward in line with long nights for my own work. It makes me feel like if I do work for this, I'll have a real meaning to live for myself.
