Review of Redo of Healer
This is the only time I will even bother to acknowledge these 1 Star Reviewers. [Though the rules clearly stated not to do so, I've seen so many reviews say something similar to: "Anyone who likes this anime has shit for brains!"] Don't listen to them, they don't understand what Dark Fantasy is or (rather they haven't been hurt by the monster it truly is.) Don't attack them, it is their right to hate this anime/LN/Manga as they see fit. This one moves mountains for the Dark Fantasy genre. As a writer, as an MMO Healer, this was an interesting one to go through. The contentis quite mature and I can't recommend it to everyone.
I often say that Redo of Healer is abhorrent but beautiful simultaneously.
I went and found the [Complete Recovery] version on Hentai Haven (It's free, isn't it?) It is the uncensored version. Even at it's worst, you never get a good look at what any character is packing "below" as it were. The artist really didn't hold back when it came to showing off the chest though. Something that I feel is important to mention is body types. Usually, when I watch a hentai series, I see massive breasts and ass with beam pole stomach physique. That's no the case here, women have curves, stomachs exist and the artist did a fantastic job in making certain aspects of the human body look "natural."
Just as the author of Berserk explained: (I'm not going to quote him)
Every character is gray, morally, they have the potential to do both good and bad. In this case, our gray character is Keyaru. Some of the things he does are absolutely awful but then he will turn and offer kindness to others.
With all of that being said, here is what I like, followed by what I don't.
Pros -
-Breaking new ground, reaching new heights for the Dark Fantasy Genre
-No cookie cutter protagonist here, Keyaru is bat-shit insane.
-Every move Keyaru makes is explained clearly and logically(albeit, in his state of insanity/psychological justification).
-Displaying the atrocities of war, slavery, rape, servitude and autocracy rather than shielding our eyes from it.
-I hate the people that have wronged Keyaru as much as I hate the ways in which he tries to out-think them.
-It makes me feel genuine sadness to see that Keyaru is so far gone, we watch his mental state gradually start to decline.
-Realistic body types
-Lawful Evil main character
Cons -
-The way Keyaru speaks of his companions in the light-novels, calling them "toys" or "possessions" is weird, it's down-right unsettling.
-This is an MMO based world, that means stats, skills, abilities, passives, stat caps and experience all play a role in the main events of the story. Every action we watch a character take is described through a skill they posses or some ability they've learned.
-Increasing Stats: the system in place for this, goes under the "oddly-specific" reasoning but I suppose it justifies the group continuing to follow him. (Aside from you know, all the mind-fuckery.)
-This is only a 12 Episode run, that means there might not be a Season 2. You have to be prepared to finish it, want more and then receive nothing.
The author took an incredible amount of time and detail to tell the reader/watcher the logic behind how healing works in this world. There is also an incredible amount of attention paid to show us why Keyaru is taking the action he does, almost every one of his moves are completely cold and calculated.
As I stated before, Dark Fantasy is one of my favorite genres because it constantly presses the morality line of "is that okay?" And sure, a lot of people claim to like Dark Fantasy until they see something that makes them uncomfortable. In this case, the main character is going for some twisted version of "ends justify the means" and after about the third episode, I was certain that the main character isn't your typical "lawful good" hero, nor is he someone I was rooting for. The basic question I found myself asking, again and again is "Can Keyaru plan for this? What will he do now that (event) has happened?" I love when I have the chance to ask myself those questions.
TLDR:
Watch this anime, don't watch this anime, it is Dark Fantasy. DARK Fantasy.
Call it a hentai if you'd like though (we never see any actual sex) but it still might fit that category.
So very many people decided to hate on this and that is why I was compelled to go and watch it. As it turns out, I was exactly right, Redo of Healer is well worth the watch/read.
