Love Between Fairy and Devil · review
This donghua was solidly entertaining, though I can’t really pinpoint why. It’s a fun watch and not too serious. Serious things sometimes happen in the show, but a lot of them just seem to roll right off the characters. They weren’t taking it that seriously, so I couldn’t either. The female lead, for instance. Even as she’s in some really dire situations, she somehow still has the energy to bicker with the male lead. It’s kind of hilarious, but also, I can’t actually feel scared for her when she’s acting like that. Maybe she’s too dumb to bescared?
Still, I didn’t mind her. She’s not the brightest, but her heart’s in the right place. The male lead… I can’t figure out what his deal is, but I don’t mind him either.
There is a well-loved Cdrama (live action) that shares this title and some characters, but the story is very different. Therefore whether you like the Cdrama or not is independent of whether you like the anime. I personally did not care for the Cdrama at all, but I solidly enjoyed the animated version. In fact, I think it’s because I already watched the Cdrama that I had such a high tolerance for the female lead being a bit useless.
I wouldn’t say I’m in love with these characters, or with the plot, nor do they make me feel deeply. In fact, with the characters being so cavalier about serious things sometimes, my brain might have not been fully on. But something about this show was just addicting and enjoyable to watch. So this show might be more of a 7 on merit, but I’ll give it a +1 bump just for enjoyment factor.
