A young adult who lives a boring and lonely life gets a chance to go back to the past and stop his ex girlfriend from dying, as well as make his own life better in the process. Oh yeah, theres gangs involved as well. And thats pretty much the plot IF you dont really think much about it. Now for me, I couldnt help but see Tokyo Revengers story as something a man that regrets the way he lived his youth would write, and once I realized that I started to relate to the protagonist struggles, and I warmed up to the anime in general, which kinda made me unable to completely shit all over this anime like I think it deserves.
So even if OBJECTIVELY I think Tokyo Revengers suck and really wasnt worth the time watching, I admit that I got invested enough that I cant say its a terrible anime.
Yes, the way the protagonist is such a weakling compared to other kids his age, and yet he still tries to fight for his girl and himself was still very relatable.
Wishing that you could back and redo parts of your past is something that I know everyone can relate to, and I guess that is one of the reasons why this anime got so popular. Not to mention the whole thing about high school gangs. Even I envied japanese schoolers a bit cuz its probably really fun to be part of those gangs when you are still young.
Still, the anime felt really dragged on at times and I am pretty sure it didnt really need 24 episodes to wrap everything up. And theres just so many nitpicks I have about the writing, like how these high schooler characters can survive getting beaten to a pulp and regenerate in a single day, or how they are strong like Dragon Ball characters even though they never mention training martial arts or anything. You are just supposed to accept that these kids can survive getting hammered on the head with iron pipes and shrug it off like its nothing. Also the time traveling. Where it comes from?! Is it magic?! Its never explained!
But thankfully for me, the final episode actually redeemed the whole thing a bit and made me interested again so I wont say it was a total waste of my time, and I want a second season to see how the rest of the story goes. But yeah, dont go watch it expecting an absolute classic or anything.
