Review of Pop Team Epic
I….don’t know what to say about this anime. I don’t want to unequally say that it’s a terrible anime, but I certainly don’t want to say that it’s great...I don’t even want to say that it’s an average mediocre anime. Whatever county you live in you have your specific kind of pop culture references to memes, art, music history, etc. and you’re going to immediately grasp what it means and why it’s funny. The only things I was able to understand were a few handfuls of references to video games and anime. But the show is deeply mired in Japanese lore, folktales, music, andjust...all things Japan. I know I’m not supposed to take it seriously because I know that it’s not supposed to be taken seriously in the least, but it’s bad enough that there were extra long segments that were in Japanese. In the back of my mind I’m thinking I know if I concentrate hard enough I’ll be able to get it. But that’s like the worst thing you can do.
I would say proceed with caution. At some points the artwork is really beautiful and other times it’s disgustingly ugly. You tell yourself, one more episode, one more episode just thinking that the next episode will be better or the last episode you watched was pretty funny so maybe the next one will be too.
I have to say, one of the strangest segments comes all the way at the end of the show with the “fake” anime where a girl moves in with a guy when his parents leave for business. There are “next episode inserts” but you never ever watch the show. It’s just weird…
Let my rating be a reflection of my personal experience and not an indicator of whether you should watch it or not. Just...watch it for what it is and if you don’t feel like finishing it you won’t be missing anything.
