Review of KonoSuba: An Explosion on This Wonderful World!
This was the big standout surprise for me this spring, mainly because of how little I expected from a spin-off of a show that I’ve kind of lost my interest in. But, this prequel series certainly delivers where it should, and managed to somewhat rejuvenate my relationship with Konosuba, making me all the more excited for the upcoming third season. It genuinely made me want to rewatch the whole show as well. In short, the world didn’t need a Megumin origin story, but it sure isn’t complaining either. This season doesn’t have to exist in order to develop characters or progress the plot. It justhas to be enjoyable, and with Konosuba’s trademark sense of humor and charm, it nails that perfectly. It even manages to sneak in some of those questionably emotional moments that the previous installments of the show used to give it a unique vibe. Megumin and Yunyun’s bittersweet relationship especially had me surprisingly intrigued the whole time.
It’s more Konosuba, a title I’m not a huge fan of, but still enjoy nonetheless, which is more praise than I could give to basically any other isekai. They just aren’t for me, and in my opinion, the universal “isekai tropes” present in this show still hold it back from being truly great.
7 / 10, Yunyun is still Konosuba's best girl, Aki Toyosaki you’re an absolute treasure.
