Review of Tokyo Revengers
This might genuinely be the most painful experience of my entire life. I’ve seen flawed protagonists before, but this guy takes it to another level — every choice he makes feels like a social experiment in how far someone can go without a single critical thought. He only makes terrible decisions, is unbelievably dumb, weak AND aesthetically painful to watch. I watched the entire series, start to finish, just to be able to say with full authority: IT DOES NOT GET BETTER Personally, I don’t think the story idea is bad, but the execution is AWFUL. It unfolds in the dumbest, most childish way possible. Looks like theshow’s terrified someone might accidentally engage a brain cell. It might be the perfect anime for 11/12-year-old boys who think time travel and street gangs are the peak of cool. But honestly, the amount of blood, murders, suicide, and the rape case make me think this wasn’t the intended audience — which means it’s just really badly done.
The supporting cast is mostly forgettable, with Mikey and Draken being the only sparks of actual intrigue. Everyone else feels like background noise that occasionally gets a line.
My personal experience was just constant frustration every 3 minutes because the MC makes choices literally no one in real life would ever make.
I only decided to watch it because I saw a few reels and thought Mikey was cute, so I gave it a shot without high expectations — and somehow, it still managed to be way worse than I thought it would be.
If someone recommends this anime to you, chances are they either secretly dislike you or have such terrible taste that you might want to seriously reconsider the value of that friendship.
