Review of KonoSuba: An Explosion on This Wonderful World!

Now I love Megumin. She is hysterical and probably my favorite character in Konosuba. But she is not able to carry her own show. This is honestly only a show that can be truly enjoyed if you’ve read ahead in the light novels and get where this is going and all the references that the movie left out. I watched this with my brother and had to explain most of the shit going on. That’s a huge letdown. And while Megumin as a character is great, she only really works with the people she plays off of. She plays well off of Yunyun, but thatdynamic isn’t enough to hold up a whole show. The other characters aren’t that strong either. I hate how this show treats pedophilia as a joke and it’s kinda weird. I mean don’t get me wrong, it is still a very funny show. But the jokes were told better before in the original. Nothing is gained from knowing this without the knowledge of what happened later in the books. If you just watched the original show, this spinoff is worthless and doesn’t add anything. I mean what does it say when my favorite parts of the show was when Kazuma and Aqua showed up, or when they were mentioned? I mean don’t get me wrong, I feel like this show added a lot, even to the original show, in that it made some of the original gags funnier (like the Axis Cultists), but as far as character or lore or even themes go, it doesn’t do anything special. But hey, I love Megumin, I love Yunyun and I love the Crimson Demons as a concept so I’m ok with this show being here. I actually quite liked it. Just not anywhere near as good as the original. But still those explosions go fucking crazy like damn. Both animation and sound design are peak during those scenes. It’s clear where the budget went here.
