Review of Astra Lost in Space
THIS IS A SPOILER-FREE REVIEW The Year 2019 was a very important year for anime. It was not only the year in which i deeply engaged into it after watching my first anime in 2016. It was absolutely packed with amazing shows like Demon Slayer, The Promised Neverland, Fire-Force, Dr.Stone,The Rising of the Shield Hero, Dororo, Vinland Saga and Kaguya-sama : Love is War. But throught the year one single show was missing from everyones radar. From all the amazing anime in 2019, Kanata no Astra is my favorite and here is why. Story - 9/10 The story is interesting from episode one on.It kinda reminded me ofthe concept of old sci-fi masterpieces like Star Trek : Voyager. I won´t go into details but note that this show definitely plays with the viewers mind. It looks like one thing but it is something completely different.The sci-fi elements are used wonderfully throughout the show and everything in the story makes sense (for the most part). I´ll admit there were some little things that were unexplained and the pacing is a little bit fast towards the end but all in all it was a very well thought out story from beginning to end.This was one of the rare occasions where i was hit by EVERY SINGLE plottwist the show had to offer. So i recommend not reading to much about it, please go into the show as blind as possible!
Animation - 8/10
The strongest part about this shows animation were the characterdesigns. Studio Lerche always uses their household characterdesigns, so this time, the characters look a bit like a mix between Assasination Classroom and Classroom of the Elite. Everyone is instantly recognizeable and i love the look and colors of their spacesuits. The animation itself is pretty alright, it gets the job done and excells at the portraying of the diferrent alien creatures the crew encounters along the way.
Sound - 7/10
The shows weakest part. The BGM was barely noticeable. Sometimes it was a plus but i would have liked a more orchestrated soundtrack. The OP was pretty good but it was not shown every episode. What i liked about it though, is that it changes here and there, giving you small hints about the plot.
Enjoyment - 9/10
This is the third anime after B-gata H-Kei and Yuri on ICE!! that i finished within 24 hours. It was a highly entertaining ride full of plottwists and turns that i could´nt see coming. I can safely recommend this to EVERYONE. Even if you´ve never seen an anime before you will enjoy this. But at the same time, veteran anime watchers will definitely get something new and fresh out of this!
