Review of A Lull in the Sea
Very good, enjoyable and original. I'll start with the good and then the bad. A Lull in the Sea's main strength is its story. As a massive hater of sappy and slow romance, I found myself watching this anime for the plot. I was interested in how the story develops, especially in the context of the setting where one cannot easily join the other society. The story does not stay in one place and keeps developing into different forms and constantly keeps you on your toes. It relaxes from time to time, but it doesn't shy away from suddenly turning everything upside down. It is alsomostly cohesive, everything connects from start to finish. The ending plot was a bit confusing but the rest was easily understood. I would say the second half of the story is where things get especially interesting.
I wouldn't say the characters are great, but they are okay. I feel like one of the MCs was a bit too aggro and he doesn't get enough backlash for it as he would in real life. But overall, they are pretty good. They are interesting enough to progress the story forward without trouble, but I didn't feel an attachment to any of them.
The ending is very convoluted and drawn out. It felt like a conflict that you saw once is repeated again for no apparent reason, so it's just the same subplot twice. There is also a very "controversial" romantic interest introduced which suddenly makes the story really weird. The romance itself is really sappy and corny. This is overshadowed by the good plot but that's still an issue.
