Review of Dororo
Another modern adaptation of a story well over 50 years old has been able to take its source material and turn it into something amazing. MAPPA has proven that it is one of the best studios when it comes to animation and shows off its prestige in much of Dororo with its beautifully drawn world of feudal Japan. The world our characters journey through is vain and unforgiving. A similar narrative and story structure of that of "Avatar the Last Airbender" with its episodic nature while still having a well written and profound overarching story that is moved forward with every episode. This story harpson the Utilitarian idea of one for all, whether sacrificing the life of one justifies the lives of the many but brings a more nuanced approach on whether morality is changed through the ambition of the person. The paradox of losing your humanity through the ambition of getting it back, to me, Dororo's beautifully dark coming of age story that features incredibly well-written themes of love, hatred, consumption, empathy, morality through a clash of deontology and utilitarianism.
Animation: Mappa comes through hard as most of the action in this show is well-paced with a strong tempo however may seem dull when compared to shows like Demon Slayer
Music: I'm usually very attentive to OSTs when watching shows but I think i was so focused on the character writing I really dont even remember much of the OST. Either it sucked or im just fried
PS. It's a shame this show was really overshadowed by shows like Demon Slayer which I can see why, this show takes a more traditional and western approach to the wandering samurai and doesn't seem to follow any major shonen tropes.
