Review of The Disastrous Life of Saiki K.
I’ve spent my entire life chasing the high of watching Saiki K for the first time. No other comedy anime has been able to fill the void. Something about it scratches a very specific itch in my brain- I’ve lost count of the number of times I’ve re-watched the show, it’s just that good. Saiki K is about the titular protagonist Saiki Kusuo, a high schooler with incredibly-op psychic powers but hates being special, and aspires to be a normal student. It's a refreshing twist on the usual I-want-to-be-the-very-best-like-no-one-ever-was, power-up-ing shonen characters. In fact, the show is about Saiki's constant attempts to make hislife as ordinary as possible, despite all his friends and the universe manifesting otherwise. The show is fast-paced, incredibly funny, and episodic (while following a loose timeline progression), which keeps things fresh but still has you invested in the plot. The whole show is super satirical, playing on the tropes that you commonly see in other anime, stretching them to the max and doing it perfectly (although there are some second-hand embarrassment moments, usually involving Kaidou, Kaidou, or Kaidou). I even love the soundtrack- the character themes are instantly recognizable. I cannot recommend this show enough - it is so hilarious, an incredibly light watch, but comes with the caveat that you'll have a hard time finding a better comedy anime after watching this one.
