The FLCL sequel seasons have been trying their best to re-serve us the original, but it’s been divided into parts. Progressive gave us its over-the-top sci fi action. Alternative gave us its story of meaningful character growth. Grunge is giving us something I thought had long been lost: its energy. The 3d animation is obviously a downgrade, but it allows them to be much more dynamic, and more easily set up shot composition that matches the original in style. I’m honestly really impressed that they were able to recognize what made FLCL Season 1 special on such a visceral level. I know a lot of this hasto do with mimicry and skillful Pillows needle drops that are probably just baiting my nostalgia, but I legitimately enjoyed my watch of this.
