Völundio: Divergent Sword Saga · review
After years of reading Iken Senki Völundio and loving the author's previous work Helck I believe I've seen enough to get a good understanding of the manga. Völundio has many of the same qualities of it's predecessor Helck, it's very entertaining to read, it has a deep, emotional, and heartfelt story. It's a manga that holds it's cards close to it's chest, it's not here with the most unique premise, or a comedy gimmick to draw you in, it's here to tell you it's story. Völundio starts off on a roller coaster of a ride just like it's predecessor Helck for sure, but that roller coasterdoesn't last very long and quickly levels out to start slowly building itself back up with it's entertaining characters, excellent world building, emotional depth and growth, all to support an intriguing and complex plot.
Make no mistake, Völundio is not a perfect manga, after all, that's an impossible feat to achieve, but it's characters have excellent chemistry, and are very enjoyable, while also being realistic by having their own flaws that make them people. It's pacing for the plot can feel somewhat slow at times, but it's clear the author has had big plans laid out for the story since the first chapter. Völundio has been an excellent read so far, combining quality comedic entertainment, deep characters, emotional moments, and great action into a single manga in a way that fits very well together. Nanaki Nanao's writing skills have clearly grown substantially since Helck and Völundio is currently an excellent work that is well worth the time to read. 9/10
