Jujutsu Kaisen Season 2 does exactly what I wanted it to do, be something greater. The first season of Jujutsu Kaisen is simply good, but nothing that makes it really stand out and make its own identity. This season does things way better in terms of pacing, hype, reveals, growing tensions, and so much more. The best thing this season had to offer was its growing tensions. Every episode continued to pile on more and more danger, death, emotion, and hype. However I did find it to be in a similar sense as I discussed in my Attack on Titan Season 4 Part 2 review, their way of building tensions is mostly just adding more pawns to a chessboard, where one thing is lead to deal with another issue by simply being there. It's not the worst way to do these kinds of large scale battles, but of course, it can feel like things become very disconnected and things happen for the sake of happening. This is apparent in a few examples I won't name where a huge threat becomes present because the plot needed it to happen for the sake of hype and nothing more.
It felt like a rollercoaster ride that didn't stop until near the end, where it starts to slow back down in the final few episodes. Where it decides to really slow down since its more the aftermath part of the arc. For the main complaint I had about the first season, that the main character was incredibly uninteresting and underdeveloped, was not only addressed but felt like he was finally given the time for his character to grow. However, we don't really get to see that happen, since this entire arc is a nonstop fighting arc, most characters never get the time to really lament or struggle with their predicament, which isn't exactly unavoidable, as they still need to fight regardless for the plot to continue. This season also greatly plays with your emotional connection to every character, which is the show's greatest strength overall. Seeing these characters give it their all and some still not being enough can range from heartbreaking to watch to a little "oh no" under your breath. I did especially like the few character deaths that were shown in different and unique ways. Some are given good send offs that are highly emotional and some bite the dust within the time of a snap. They show that no matter who the character was, they could potentially die and its established at the beginning of the arc, so it allows you to feel the tension from the get-go.
They also bring out every single thing that's been marinating in the first season but we had yet to see, my only complaint is again, it goes back to artificially making these things happen, as the plot demands that these hype things happen for the sake of hype. The animation is pretty damn good and I only wish the animators to have a goddamn break, and that goes for every anime. Animators first, show second. Its unfortunate to see that people are so impatient for a fictional product that they are willing to not only ignore the health and mental issues that animators face, but even say that the animators deserve it. Spectacular work to the animators and I wish them all the best. Overall, extremely entertaining, adrenaline pushing, great writing and execution.
