1 Litre no Namida was one of the best experiences I ever had reading a work, be it a book or a manga. It brought me so many feelings while reading that it is hard to describe it objectively without imposing my opinion. The story is inspired by real facts and tells the story of Ikeuchi Aya, a girl diagnosed with an incurable degenerative disease at 15 years old. Aya fought against the disease and continued to live her life until her death at 25 years old. The work is very touching and inspiring. I believe that this manga has as one of its main messagesto show us that we do not give importance to things that make us human beings, such as our movement, speech and even breathing. These skills are essential for our survival and if we lose them, we become so fragile. Even so, we do not value these functions.

Throughout this work, it is shown how Aya’s disease develops and how it affects her and her family. Can you imagine how painful it must have been for the family? They knew what was going to happen and yet they could not change it. The feeling of helplessness is not even possible to describe. Even with all this, they still tried everything to help her, letting her free to choose what she wanted to do. This is not seen in all families.

Another aspect that the text addresses is the way people who live with someone who has some physical or mental disability behave in relation to that person. Often, they treat her as if she were not normal, as if she were incapable of doing things by herself or as if she needed pity or compassion. This attitude can be very harmful for the disabled person, because she can feel excluded, inferiorized or devalued. What she really needs is encouragement and support to overcome her challenges and develop her potentialities. When someone does things for her, without her asking or needing, they are taking away her autonomy and her motivation. In addition, this way of treatment can negatively affect her self-esteem and her mental health.

1 Litre no Namida is a simple and objective work, but that makes us reflect a lot on the way Aya faces her problems. We can identify with her and understand what she is going through. This manga is a lesson of appreciation of the basic things of life and of making the most of time. Aya shows us how important it is to fight for our dreams, even in the face of difficulties and limitations. She also teaches us to value the people who love us and support us, such as her family and friends. This is a work that impacted me positively, maybe because it is based on real facts, but that will remain marked in my soul, because it made me change.
