Review of Parasyte: The Maxim
Ah, Parasyte. An anime about mankind, humanity, humans, aliens and dubst- Hey, I'm Jumpy. Here's my review of Parasyte. Parasyte is an anime by Madhouse, about a teenager called Izumi, that suddenly is attacked by this worm thing and now has a Parasyte in his right hand, which he names Migi. Let's get to the point; is Parasyte good? Well, yes, but it's hard to say. It has great moments, the story is actually pretty good and for the most part, well executed. Even though the pacing was, sometimes, all over the place, it tried to keep itself in one route and succeded at that. The characters inthe anime are a bit too easy to judge, actually. Izumi and Migi are great and both are well developed, but the others... Well, not so much. Murano is a very cheesy 80's chick. It really felt out of place and kinda weird, but that's one thing. It does feel like that, because the manga was made in the 80's. Madhouse adapted this anime now, in 2014, but they didn't really wanna put us in the 80's setting, so they shoehorned the internet and cellphones in this, which really can take a few viewers out of the anime. This would make more sense if it was set in the 80's, because with the internet and phones now in this generation, I don't think these monsters can hide for more than a day without being posted on Facebook. I feel like this was a stupid move, and they should've kept it in the 80's, but that's just one large nitpick.
Anyways, other than Murano being a whiny shit about Izumi changing all the time, the characters were all pretty good. Yes, not all of them, but for the most part, they were alright.
The animation is pretty cool. I liked it. People complain about the CGI, but to be honest, I never really noticed it. I did researched a few of the CGI in the show, which is mostly crowds and some action scenes, but they never really took me out of the anime like some other ones. You know, Aldnoah.Zero...Yeah.
People complain about the soundtrack, but that's completely subjective. It comes to your taste in music, and I personally liked it. The dubstep was pretty good and so was the OP and ED. One thing I will admit is that some dubstep background songs will be playing while people are talking and/or standing, which looks kinda dumb when the drop happens in the song.
Overall, Parasyte is a pretty good watch and despite some of its flaws, I thought it was pretty great, it had a good story with likable and great characters, and I didn't mind the CGI nor Dubstep. It's pretty hard to rate the show, (for me at least) because my enjoyment gets in the way, but here's how I'll settle it.
Parasyte is a 7/10. If I include my enjoyment, which was rather high, I would give Parasyte an 8/10. We good? We good.
