Review of Parasyte: The Maxim
Contains Spoiler: I am just writing this review in answer to the questions put forward by Ra in his review which is so popular in this forum: He is saying the show is overrated and has given some points from his angle of view. I would like to give an alternative take on this story. The philosphy of this anime/manga is a bit deep layered. It has a number of character arks of the protagonist along which the story moves forward: But the main thing it is showing below: It is giving us an idea about how the other creatures might view human beings from their point of view.We are in the top of the food chain, we are all powerful, doing whatever we please with the nature and other creatures without showing enough empathy towards any of them. But suddenly the power blance shifts, when the parasites come in, who are at first glance have a certain upper hand against the humans, and they start feeding upon humans just like humans have done with all the other creatures and after a while a human resistance against parasites form up to restore human's superiority. Shinichi and Migi plays the part of the protagonist here, one each from the both sides and their views make viewer feel certain emotions in the story from both perspective. After a while through the story we can grasp certain things like, there are certain similarities and dissimilarities between humans and parasites that are very important. We found two character from both sides Izumi Nobuko (Shinichi's Mom) and Tamiya Reiko showing that motherly love can be found in both creatures (which is evident in nearly 99% of the creatures on earth). We can also see how venomously cruel humans can be by the character of Uragami who is far worse than the parasites( who actually have some logical reasons to do the deeds they have done). This makes us question that we might all have born human but there are so many 'beast's roaming around among us as fellow humans who don't have a single ounce of humanity in them. Tamiya Reiko actually pointed out the crucial difference between the two 'Species'. Parasites are actually weaker than humans because they cannot reproduce another of their kind. Most of them value logical reasoning more than emotions. But all they care about is surviving! They are not 'Living' their life like the humans are. That's why she said not to pity them, when all Shinichi did till then was fearing Parasites and their killing nature.
At the end Shinichi puts up the question that what right he has on the life of another creature, and was deciding to give Gotou a chance to stay alive. But Gotou staying alive might threaten the life of a huge number of humans including Shinichi and his loved ones. That's why he killed it in the end. And in the end the solution was the humans and parasites will both cohabitat in the world after adjusting their carnivorous nature. Its just a message to us, humans that: It is not our world just because we are all powerful. We have to be respectful to other creatures and learn to cohabitat with each other, because only in that way the balance of the world will remain intact.
There is a lot of Heartwrenching moments in this anime. But I've to say 3 moments stand out, 1) Shinichi and his mother's relationship during & after she got killed by the parasite, 2) Tamiya Reiko dying to protect a human child, 3) Kana's death with 'Next to you' on background will make you feel a lot of pain.
There are lots of side things I've ignored. But this is the gist of it.
P.S~ EP 5,6,7 are one of the best anime arcs I've ever seen. Short but strong and impactful. Also try the live action. It's great. One of the very few good adaptation of manga/anime in Live Action
