This Monster Wants to Eat Me · review
This Monster Wants to Eat Me is not a romance or girls love story, it has the genre labeled on it yet that is as deep as it goes. The relationship present in the story that is meant to be the driving force for this label, just simply is not romantical or sexual. Hinako and Shiori, the two main characters portrayed on the front, have a relationship where the human simply wants to die, while the monster wants to eat the former. Another character named Miko, is the slightly obsessed and overprotective childhood best friend of Hinako, they are closer to a friendly dynamic rather than a romanticone.
Is this a bad thing? No, the story is still fine without the romance aspect.
What is wrong is the romance and girls love label being put on this work, it does not fit and only leads to confusion.
It could also be me who is wrong, I won't deny that, since the author could have intended for their relationship to be a twisted form of love, sitting under the surface and easily misunderstood.
Even if that is the case, there isn't really anything that alludes to this in the story, the closest I could assume of the both is that they are simply friends (Which is what a character in the story even did).
Friendship between Hinako and Shiori is also a stretch, since it is all for their personal goals, one wanting to die and the other wanting to nurture when the meal is ripe.
I do recommend this manga if you want a story centered around a human and monster dynamic.
The story certainly feels a bit darker and grittier when the idea of it being a love story gets removed, since it is really about the senseless killing between monsters, who simply want to feed off of meat.
While on the side of that is the inner conflict of the main character, Hinako, and her feelings surrounding death.
Overall I am personally enjoying it this far, the publication of it in english is far behind, so I can't give a full general review.
Instead of having a full, proper review, I simply wanted to clarify that it is not romance, to anyone that wants to try reading it before they get confused about the story contents.
