Review of High School of the Dead

High School of the Dead is one of those animes that make me question, can an echii appeal also be a masterpiece? There was something seriously different in Japan during this era of anime that even echii fan service had amazing production value. The story is about zombies, survival, guns, and fan service, all in an adult gorey showcase. In a way, the echi comedy is really a satire aimed at most high school anime and the action genre as a whole. With big guns, cute girls being eaten, a hot harem trio, and action scenes. This show is anything but boring. In fact, the realdownside is that the story needs a second season.

So concerning the fan service, I am truly at odds at how serious I should be rating anime. I mean, this show is amazing....but it has clear sexual appeal.....but the fight scenes are amazing....but the bathroom scene lol.....but the zombies are truly threatening.....but the miniskirt ripping lol.

After much thought after all these years, I can say that despite the obvious lewd scenes, some anime shows stand apart from the rest solely based on the 90% of all the other things it aims to depict. That, judging a show with just lewd behavior means I will be vastly overshadowing all the other things this show does right. I have learned, from other animes as well, that if I just judge this show based on it's provocative material, I will be doing a de-service to all the other things that an anime could do right. And in the general sense, I have to judge an anime as a whole and not just it's parts. So, in terms of fan service, look no further. In terms of an amazing show with action scenes, zombies, unique story that stands far outside the norm, I would this anime is a rare production that ended as quickly as it appeared. The proof is in the lingering thoughts, and this anime continues to stand out even years later. The story must continue.
