This isn't completely useless nor inherently bad, in my sense of understanding, this recap could serves as two prominent purposes: 1. If you wanted to make sure to not miss or forget anything from the original anime, before moving on to the continuation such as The End of Evangelion. Because admittedly, Evangelion is famed for having such a heavy and complex story that some people might find it hard to digest. So instead of re-watching the entirety of 26 episodes for making sure, you could watch this condensed version as a replacement. 2. This doesn't contain any plot-new information, it's a matter of fact. But I would still recommendwatching it at some point; as there is animation and voice-overs unique to it.

The remaining purpose would be a nostalgia trip. Hey, maybe anyone out there would like to experience a summarized depression experience before watching Thrice Upon a Time. Who knows anyways.
