The Jump Super Stage Red at Jump Festa 2024 announced a second season for the new Rurouni Kenshin: Meiji Kenkaku Romantan (Rurouni Kenshin) television anime on Sunday. The new season, subtitled Kyoto Douran (Kyoto Disturbance), will premiere in 2024.

The first season debuted on Fuji TV's noitaminA programming block on July 7 and ended with 24 episodes on Friday. Aniplex of America licensed the anime in North America and streamed it on Crunchyroll, followed by an English dub on October 15.

Hideyo Yamamoto (Strike the Blood) directed the new anime at LIDENFILMS. Hideyuki Kurata (Drifters) handled the series composition, and Terumi Nishii (JoJo no Kimyou na Bouken Part 4: Diamond wa Kudakenai) and Youko Uchida (C Danchi sub-character design) designed the characters. Yuu Takami (Rainbow: Nisha Rokubou no Shichinin) composed the music.

The television anime adapts Nobuhiro Watsuki's historical drama manga, which ran in Weekly Shounen Jump from 1994 to 1999. Watsuki and his wife Kaoru Kurosaki launched the Hokkaido-hen (Hokkaido Arc) sequel manga in Jump SQ. in November 2016. Shueisha published the ninth volume on November 2.

The original anime series by Studio Deen and Gallop aired in 94 episodes from 1996 to 1998. Aniplex released a four-episode OVA the following year that served as a prequel to the television anime, followed by a two-episode sequel OVA in 2002.
