'As One' Anime Movie Adapts Arcade Game 'Hoshi to Tsubasa no Paradox' for Summer 2025
Game developer Square Enix announced on Tuesday that its arcade game Hoshi to Tsubasa no Paradox (Starwing Paradox) will be adapted into a full-length anime movie titled As One, scheduled for release in Summer 2025.
The movie will be helmed by director Koubun Shizuno (Sidonia no Kishi, Godzilla trilogy) and feature character designs by Yoshiyuki Sadamoto (Shinseiki Evangelion, FLCL), who also worked on the original game.
As One will serve as a completely original prequel set 20 years prior to the game's event. Square Enix emphasized that the movie would not be bound by the game's story and encouraged the creative team to develop a fresh and engaging narrative. Shizuno collaborated with a scriptwriter to craft a new story, while Sadamoto redesigned the characters for the big screen.
The movie follows You, a high school student in modern-day Japan who dreams of becoming a musician but struggles with family opposition and conflicts within his band. One day, while walking through Shibuya, he hears a desperate voice calling for help, and a blinding white light engulfs him.
Meanwhile, far across the cosmos, the celestial body Meguriboshi is on the brink of war over the energy source known as "Hoshichi" (Star Blood). Just as a ceasefire is about to be negotiated between the warring nations, a massive orbital debris field descends, threatening disaster. Laco, a young mechanic, rushes to aid the planet's defense force but finds herself in grave danger. As she falls into unconsciousness, her mind connects with You's, marking the beginning of their intertwined fates.
Originally released as an arcade game in 2018, Hoshi to Tsubasa no Paradox was developed by Square Enix with worldbuilding and animation production by Sunrise. The game featured industry veterans such as producer Naohiro Ogata (Mobile Suit Gundam Unicorn) and mechanical designer Ippei Gyoubu (Mobile Suit Gundam: Iron-Blooded Orphans). However, its network services were discontinued in 2021, effectively rendering it inactive.
