'Fruit Basket: Prelude' Compilation Movie Announced for February 2022
The official website of the Fruit Basket television anime announced a compilation film subtitled Prelude on Friday, revealing a key visual (pictured). The film will open in Japan on February 18, 2022.
The film will serve as an omnibus to the three-season anime series, including the Kyouko to Katsuya no Monogatari (The Story of Kyouko and Katsuya) prequel, as well as new scenes written by the original creator Natsuki Takaya taking place after the television anime. The staff and cast from the television anime are returning at TMS Entertainment.
The Kyouko to Katsuya no Monogatari side story anime will adapt chapters from volume 16 of the original manga, centering on Kyouko and Katsuya—parents of the female protagonist Tohru Honda. Miyuki Sawashiro (Noragami) and Yoshimasa Hosoya (Bungou Stray Dogs) are reprising their roles as Kyouko and Katsuya, respectively.
The supernatural shoujo manga ran in Hana to Yume magazine from 1998 to 2006. Takaya drew the Fruits Basket: Another sequel manga between September 2015 and December 2018.
The first two seasons aired in 25 episodes in Spring 2019 and 2020. The third and final season premiered in 13 episodes in Spring 2021. Crunchyroll and Funimation simulcast all three seasons with subtitles and in English dub, respectively. Funimation also licensed the anime's home video rights and released the first two seasons on home video between November 2019 and March 23.
